Dog Bites Lead To Bans

The media reporting of dog attacks is currently hitting the headlines on an almost daily basis. My short blog features this topic, but in my job as a personal injury solicitor my message is simple, if you, your animal, or anyone that you know has been injured, by another dog, then contact me to make a claim if you wish to do something about it.” 

 

Virtually all dog attacks are avoidable, and no-one should be hurt and left uncompensated. 

 

American bully XL dogs have come in for a lot of bad publicity, following the death and injuries suffered to children, adults, and other animals, in separate attacks, in recent months. 

 

The American bully XL has the appearance of a powerful and ferocious animal which is not surprising as it originated about 30 years ago after American Pit Bull Terriers were crossed with American Staffordshire Terriers. Two powerful dogs bred to produce another powerful animal with an equally intimidating name. 

 

In response to an obvious public outcry, following these distressing attacks, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has vowed to ban the breed and add them to the list already named in the Dangerous Dogs Act. 

 

However, as the dust has begun to settle, there has been a shift of support, in the Media for these dogs, and not just from their owners but from professionals working in the canine world. The old adage being that it is not the dog that is to blame but the owner of that dog. The vast majority of all dogs, not classed as Dangerous Dogs as defined by the Act, do not have a propensity to attack other dogs, animals or people. However, there are some that do, and together with an irresponsible owner, a perfect storm is created when incidents of the type recently reported, occur. 

 

As the law stands there is not a Dangerous Owners Act and let’s face it there never will be, so in the meantime everyone needs to be vigilant. If the worst-case scenario does occur, you cannot turn the clock back, but you can bring a claim against the owner for compensation for any injury or loss suffered.
